I made this mobile before Em was born (had lots of spare time back then, even if I didn’t realize it at the time!) and since a couple of people asked me about it, I’d thought I’d share it here.
I knew I wanted a mobile for the nursery and had seen some beautiful, handmade ones on Etsy. This one in particular, I liked, but I couldn’t afford the $80 price tag.
So, I decided to make my own. I made several small animals out of felt:
The fox was first. I used the pattern and instructions from Abby Glassenberg’s tutorial at Timeless Treasures. Since I hadn’t made felt softies before, this was a good starting point.
Next, I tackled the bear. I used this pattern as a template for the bear, modifying it slightly (different ears, different eyes, different tail).
With two softies down I had a little more confidence and drew up a pattern for the deer which is similar to the one in the Etsy listing I liked.
I thought hard about the last animal to make — squirrel? hedgehog? owl?? I wanted to make an owl but couldn’t find an owl pattern I liked. They all seemed bizarre or too cute. And hedgehogs, while cute, are a little scarce in California. So raccoons, with their funny bandit masks, it was! I used the same pattern as the fox as an outline, but reversed it, and added a mask, arms, and striped on the tail.
For the center, I wanted a giant tree. It’s supposed to be a Sequoia on a much smaller scale. 🙂 This one was the easiest: I just drew up a tree on a piece of paper similar in size to the other softies, cut out the felt pieces, sewed and stuffed it.
I hand-sewed bits of thin ribbon on the top of each softie to make little loops to attach jump rings, so that I would be able to hang these with string.
Making the mobile frame: To make the frame, I purchased a 2″ wooden cube and 2 dowels at the local craft store. Holes were drilled into the cube and the dowels were inserted with glue. After stringing up the softies, the mobile was ready to go.
Hanging the mobile: Initially, I didn’t want to make a giant hole in the ceiling to attach the mobile. I ended up finding a used wind-up mobile arm on craigslist similar to this one. It attaches to the crib so there was no need to hang it from the ceiling. I removed the original mobile and just hung mine from the new arm. Bonus: it plays a tune AND turns the mobile! I would show a picture, but I’ve since removed this arm because the baby is older and can destroy it. 🙂
After I removed the mobile from the crib, I still wanted to hang it. I ended up using a Command mini hook on the ceiling and hanging it above the changing table with fishing wire. M loves it and it’s a good distraction while I try to change her!
I’d love to hear about it if you decide to make one!

Job searching isn’t just about sending out resumes and waiting for a response. The process frequently turns into a struggle to stand out among other candidates. This struggle is especially pronounced in highly competitive countries like the United States. Many job seekers encounter various obstacles that hinder their ability to secure consistent earnings:
– Intense competition. One position can receive applications from tens or even hundreds of people. These applicants’ rich portfolios and endorsements make it harder for fresh professionals to compete.
– Experience requirements. It’s a catch-22: no experience means no job, but no job means no experience.
– Lack of references. Lacking prior references, job seekers often find themselves excluded from recruiters’ consideration lists.
– Geographic limitations. In rural or less populated areas, job availability may be scarce.
– Restricted opportunities for freelancers. Despite the rise of remote work, many companies still prefer local employees or those willing to work on-site.
Such difficulties weigh heavily on individuals new to their professions or transitioning to new industries. As a result, many job seekers lose motivation or settle for low-paying positions just to cover basic needs.
An Alternative Path is Available. You can bypass these barriers by leveraging online marketplaces for your services. These platforms help users find clients despite lacking a strong portfolio.
Why Is It So Hard to Find Work Nearby?
Most people assume local job hunting should be straightforward. In reality, this method is often fraught with unanticipated challenges:
– Limited job options. Job availability in rural areas or city suburbs is often scarce, particularly in niche industries.
– Skills not aligning with local demand. You may find that your expertise isn’t needed locally. For instance, if you’re an IT specialist, but only construction or retail positions are available nearby.
– Below-market salaries. Local employers may offer wages significantly below the market rate.
– Scheduling issues. Even if a job is nearby, the schedule might be inconvenient.
The Central Idea. The digital age has reduced the importance of location for work. Tech and online job platforms let you expand beyond local clients. This also lets you prioritize clients who value your expertise over your proximity.
Many who have embraced marketplaces highlight the greater flexibility and wider client base. A testimonial from another platform reveals that this approach doubled a user’s earnings while reducing dependency on local jobs.
How Do Marketplaces Solve the Earning Problem?
Marketplaces are a game-changer for professionals facing employment difficulties. With minimal barriers to entry, marketplaces provide an inclusive environment for professionals.
– Broader client base. You are no longer limited by your city or region.
– Low initial investment. To begin working on a marketplace, you don’t need to invest in an office, advertising, or expensive tools.
– Work at your own pace. These platforms allow for a work-life balance tailored to individual preferences.
– Transaction protection mechanisms. Many platforms provide secure payment methods, eliminating the risk of fraud or non-payment.
A Key Example. Link to his story – Online Jobs. An individual’s journey from small orders to consistent earnings demonstrates marketplaces’ potential. With continuous improvement supported by feedback, they expanded their professional reach.
