I have a young daughter who loves crafts and is continually fascinated by my scrapbooks and all the stuff used for making them. Recently, she’s been asking me to help with them and if she can do one of her own. So cute!

I remembered that the wonderfully creative Krystal Iduñate had made an advent calendar to help her daughter work on her own December Daily album last year and I knew I wanted to do the same for my little girl this December.

For the base of the album, I used one of the new 4″ x 6″ minibooks from Everyday Explorers Co. The Story Start journal is a great size with heavy paper that will withstand my daughter’s heaving coloring. 🙂 Since my daughter is only 5 and just barely reading, the project needs to be kept reasonable for her. I created some pre-made pages in the album using stamps from Everyday Explorers Co, Paper Person Shop, and Studio Calico. Each day has a loose “theme” with a small mini day tag (stamped from the Mini Calendar Days stamp) and matching embellishments.

Here’s a look at a few sample pages.

Day 3 – includes a prompt to draw or write out a holiday wish list (stamps are from Holiday Prompts and the Explorers Alpha) and embellishments from my stash

For the actual calendar bags, I made these out of plain kraft paper. They are roughly 4″ wide by 5″ tall and I only made them because I couldn’t find similar bags at my local craft store! The front has the number stamped with the solid Alberta stamp (Paper Person Shop) in black with December stamped and embossed in white from the Month By Month stamp (Everyday Explorers Co).

I LOVE how this turned out and I hope my little girl does too! I can’t wait for us to work on our albums together in December!!

    Dressed for the coldest conditions, I step out of the zodiac and place my feet on the White Continent for the first time.

    I feel a little awkward, because I’m still finding my way in this Antarctic armor. I’m wearing four layers on top, including three jackets, all of their hoods over my head. Thick winter gloves cover my fingers. In my pocket is, of all things, a bag of ashes, which adds to the bulk. I can feel the bump it makes on the right side of my jacket as I bend over and secure my snowshoes.

    I brought the bag because, like many travelers, I thought spreading Dad’s ashes somewhere special would be a nice tribute. This June will be 10 years since he died, and it would have been special to share this trip to Antarctica with him. Maybe a ceremonial offering, such as the spreading of his ashes, could suffice.

    I’m prepared to spread the ashes on this very walk, amongst the icebergs, mountains, penguins and glacier blue ice. But, before we set off on the snowshoe, the guide gives a safety briefing that cools my jets.

    Antarctica has strict regulations — nothing should touch the ground other than our boots. No sitting. No snow angels. No packs on the ground. Do not toss away food or pour out drinks. Under no circumstances should anything be left behind, he says.

    When drawing up this dream ceremony, it never occurred to me to think about any rules or regulations surrounding the spreading of ashes. Turns out, not only do ash-scattering restrictions exist, but all around the world, there are specific rules about where and how you can spread them both on land and in the water.
